North Carolina’s September Employment Figures Released

The unemployment rate in North Carolina remained steady at 3.8% in September 2024, according to the latest report from the state government. This figure is unchanged from August’s revised rate and represents a 0.2 percentage point increase over the past year. Meanwhile, the national unemployment rate saw a slight decrease, moving from 4.2% in August to 4.1% in September.

In terms of employment numbers, North Carolina experienced a minor increase in employment by 659 individuals in September, bringing the total number of people employed to 5,068,142. Over the past year, the state added 3,902 jobs. The number of unemployed individuals decreased by 1,708 since August, although there was an increase of 11,192 unemployed individuals over the year.

The state also reported a rise in seasonally adjusted Total Nonfarm employment, which increased by 8,000 positions in September, reaching a total of 5,033,700. Notable industry growth was observed in Education & Health Services with an addition of 6,800 jobs, followed by Professional & Business Services with 1,900 jobs. However, industries such as Leisure & Hospitality Services and Financial Activities saw declines of 1,500 and 1,000 jobs, respectively.

Over the year, North Carolina’s Total Nonfarm jobs increased by 76,600, with significant contributions from the Education & Health Services and Leisure & Hospitality Services sectors. Government jobs also rose by 16,700, while sectors like Trade, Transportation & Utilities, and Manufacturing experienced declines. The next update on unemployment rates, detailing county-specific data for September 2024, is scheduled for release on October 30, 2024.
