Winston-Salem Seeks Nonprofit Partners for Crystal Towers Redevelopment
In an effort to address the pressing needs of one of Winston-Salem’s high-rise public housing communities, local housing officials are calling for proposals from nonprofit organizations. The initiative focuses on the renovation or redevelopment of Crystal Towers, a building that has long served seniors and disabled individuals but now requires significant structural improvements.
The estimated cost for a complete rehabilitation of Crystal Towers stands at over $40 million, a figure that poses a challenge for Aspire Executive Director Ted Ortiviz. “It’s [an] unachievable number for us to finance or to put a capital stack together that’ll cover that amount,” Ortiviz explains. “So we want to make sure that we’re doing what’s in the best interest of our residents.”
The call for proposals is specifically directed at nonprofits that have been active in Forsyth County for a minimum of five years and currently manage or own at least 250 residential units. This ensures that partnering organizations have the necessary experience and capacity to undertake such a large-scale project.
Proposals must be submitted by November 30 and must also include a commitment to allow current residents the right to return after the redevelopment is completed.
