Water Service Restored to Most After Major Break
*Update at 10:25 p.m. on July 30, 2026: The City of Winston-Salem officials announced in a press release that water service has been restored to all affected customers following the July 29 water main break. They added, “Effective immediately, the boil water advisory has been lifted for a portion of the impacted area after laboratory testing confirmed the water is safe for human consumption. Customers in the remaining impacted area must continue to boil water until additional testing is completed.”
Approximately 200,000 residents in Forsyth County experienced a disruption in water service due to a significant water main break. Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Utilities Director Courtney Driver indicated that repair efforts are ongoing and could conclude by Friday morning.
“Assuming that we don’t hit any other major challenges, we are anticipating that the pipe will be repaired,” Driver stated. “Crews are working through the night.”
To ensure safety, the Utilities Administration has commenced an 18-hour process for water quality testing. The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality’s Public Water Supply Section will verify the results.
Once safety is confirmed, the current boil advisory will be removed in specific areas. Until then, the advisory remains active. Residents can track the latest information on affected areas using an interactive map available online.
