Watauga County Activists Seek Injunction Against Current Election Maps

Injunction sought to block Watagua County maps in 2026 election

Watauga County Election Maps Under Legal Scrutiny

A legal battle is unfolding in Watauga County as voting rights advocates push for a halt on the current election maps ahead of the 2026 election cycle. This move is part of a broader lawsuit challenging recent changes in the electoral process for county positions.

The controversy stems from a redistricting effort approved by GOP legislators, which significantly shifted the political landscape in favor of Republicans. Consequently, the Board of Commissioners transitioned from a Democratic majority to full Republican control.

In 2024, voters expressed their preference for a hybrid system of district and at-large seats through a ballot measure. However, this voter-approved change was postponed by a legislative act, delaying its implementation until 2034.

In response, the Watauga County Voting Rights Task Force and Common Cause, among others, initiated legal action against these developments. Their lawsuit seeks to challenge the redistricting changes.

Recently, the plaintiffs requested a preliminary injunction to prevent the use of the contentious maps in the upcoming elections. They propose utilizing the voter-endorsed district design instead.

The lawsuit names several Watauga County officials responsible for overseeing local elections as defendants.
