Amazon’s New Data Center Sparks Public Debate in Richmond County
A bustling construction site in Richmond County marks the beginning of Amazon’s latest venture: a vast data center situated directly opposite Duke Energy’s natural gas power facility. This development has drawn significant public attention as discussions unfold regarding the environmental implications of the project.
On Thursday, a crowded public hearing took place at the Richmond County Courthouse, where state regulators deliberated over two crucial permits. These permits concern nearly 600 diesel backup generators for Amazon and around 60 temporary generators for Duke Energy, both intended for the same location.
The majority of attendees voiced their opposition, citing concerns over potential impacts on air and water quality, as well as issues of governmental transparency and noise pollution. Among those speaking out was 19-year-old Princess Lockhart, a lifelong Richmond County resident with personal health challenges.
“As a young Richmond County resident who has battled asthma and other health concerns, I know how air quality can affect a person’s education, daily life and future,” Lockhart stated emphatically.
This hearing was the first opportunity for local residents to publicly express their concerns about the proposed permits. As the deadline looms, today marks the last chance for community members to submit their comments on the state’s draft permits.
