Protests Erupt Nationwide Against USPS Privatization Threats

Wilmington-area union workers protest Trump's proposal to sell off parts of USPS

Protests Erupt Nationwide Over Potential USPS Privatization

Widespread protests have emerged as union workers and concerned citizens unite under the rallying cry “US Mail, Not for Sale,” highlighting the perceived threats to the United States Postal Service. The demonstrations have sparked conversations about the future of one of the nation’s enduring institutions.

Daniel Matthews, who serves as the president of the Wilmington local branch 145 of the American Postal Workers Union, expressed concerns over recent administrative suggestions. “The administration has alluded to the fact that they want to privatize again, and this is the beginning of our movement,” Matthews stated. “This is the tip of the sword.”

The Trump Administration’s discussions regarding the potential sale of the USPS’s package delivery service have prompted fears of increased postal costs nationwide. Matthews emphasized, “Right now, the US Postal Service is the low cost anchor, right? We keep the prices down because we’re constitutionally and congressionally required to provide a service to the American people.”

Concerns are bolstered by a recent industry report from Wells Fargo, which suggests that turning the USPS into a private entity could lead to significant price hikes in package delivery, with potential financial burdens on taxpayers.

The protest in Wilmington was not isolated, as similar demonstrations unfolded at post office locations across the country, demonstrating the widespread concern over the issue.
