North Carolina Film Industry Faces Global Challenges Amid Growth

North Carolina's film industry navigates changing landscape

North Carolina’s Film Industry Sees Economic Gains Amid Global Challenges

In an impressive display of economic vitality, North Carolina’s film and television sector generated just over $185 million last year. This achievement marks the fourth-largest annual revenue for the industry within the state over the past decade. The funds derive from a range of productions, including feature films, streaming series, and reality TV, underscoring the region’s appeal as a production hub.

These productions contribute significantly to the local economy, supporting upwards of 7,000 jobs. The state’s diverse landscapes play a pivotal role in attracting filmmakers, providing a versatile backdrop for various storytelling needs.

Guy Gaster, the Director of the North Carolina Film Office, highlights the allure of the state’s natural settings but acknowledges the challenges facing domestic filmmaking. “Production companies are finding it cheaper to go to European countries, to go to the Oceania countries, with New Zealand and Australia,” Gaster notes. “They are finding it to be a better business practice to shoot overseas and bring the projects back.”

As the industry grapples with these challenges, Gaster admits that North Carolina lacks a definitive solution to keep productions local. Discussions within the industry propose measures such as implementing tariffs and enhancing national film incentives to maintain competitiveness and bolster domestic film production.
