Nicole Eastman Steps Up as New Yadkin Riverkeeper to Tackle Challenges

Yadkin Riverkeeper has a new leader

New Leadership for Yadkin Riverkeeper as Nicole Eastman Steps In

Nicole Eastman, who has been an integral part of the Yadkin Riverkeeper team for the past two years, is stepping into the role of riverkeeper to lead efforts in safeguarding the Yadkin-Pee Dee watershed. With a keen interest in the fusion of science and environmental advocacy, Eastman’s new position aligns perfectly with her long-standing passions.

“It feels like a perfect combination of my passions: protecting our water resources for the public and wildlife, and promoting environmental justice,” Eastman shares enthusiastically.

Eastman is acutely aware of the challenges confronting the Yadkin River, with issues such as CAFO runoff, PFAS pollution, and insufficient municipal engagement being at the forefront. However, her attention is also focused on the increasing presence of data centers and power plants along the river.

“I’m very concerned about the cumulative impact of these extremely water-intensive facilities,” Eastman notes. “Not only water availability, but also water quality, especially as we’re noticing the impacts of the current drought on the river.”

For residents looking to contribute, Eastman highlights opportunities to join river cleanups and restoration projects that occur throughout the year across the watershed.

This leadership transition sees Eastman succeeding Edgar Miller, who will remain active as the executive director of the Yadkin Riverkeeper.
