Michael Whatley Announces Candidacy for North Carolina Senate Race

Michael Whatley formally announces run for U.S. Senate

The political landscape in North Carolina is heating up as candidates prepare for the upcoming U.S. Senate race. This week marked significant announcements from top contenders in both major political parties, setting the stage for what promises to be a fierce competition.

On Thursday, Michael Whatley, hailing from Blowing Rock, officially launched his campaign at Loray Mill in Gastonia. Already securing a pivotal endorsement from former President Trump, Whatley emerges as a key figure in the Republican bid for the Senate seat in the November 2026 election.

This development follows the decision of incumbent Senator Thom Tillis not to pursue another term. Meanwhile, on the Democratic front, former Governor Roy Cooper has also announced his candidacy, adding to the race’s intensity. Whatley emphasized economic issues during his campaign announcement.

“In order to rebuild our economy, I will fight for policies that will create more jobs and higher wages, lower gasoline and grocery prices and lower taxes for every family,” Whatley stated.

Currently serving as the chairman of the Republican National Committee, Whatley is notably aligned with Trump but is venturing into electoral politics for the first time.

North Carolina’s Senate race in 2026 is anticipated to be highly competitive and among the most financially demanding contests.
