Celebrated Performers to Illuminate International Black Theatre Festival in Winston-Salem
The International Black Theatre Festival in Winston-Salem is gearing up for a remarkable event, showcasing an impressive lineup that promises to captivate audiences. Described as the best iteration yet by Jackie Alexander, Producing Artistic Director of the North Carolina Black Repertory Company, this year’s festival will feature distinguished performers such as Jimmie “JJ” Jeter, known for his role in Hamilton, and esteemed Broadway star Phylicia Rashad. An exciting addition to the festival is the premiere of the documentary Holy Ground, which delves into the festival’s enduring legacy.
This year’s festival will be co-chaired by Peter Parros and Angela Robinson, both celebrated for their roles in the TV series “The Haves and the Have Nots.” Robinson expressed her enthusiasm for her new role.
“I really want all of us to understand that what you all and now us are doing is a holy act,” she stated. “The theater changes lives, and so when you say ‘Holy ground!’, really understand that the work we’re doing is work that is vital. It’s important. It matters.”
With Parros and Robinson joining the ranks of past festival leaders like Sidney Poitier and Maya Angelou, this year’s event is set to uphold the festival’s tradition of excellence. The International Black Theatre Festival is scheduled to take place from July 27 to August 1, spanning various venues throughout the Twin City.
