High Point’s Ambitious Housing Initiative: 5,000 Units in Five Years

High Point is setting its sights on an ambitious goal to tackle its housing challenges. A new plan aims to build or preserve 5,000 housing units within the city over the next five years, addressing the pressing issues of limited housing supply and escalating costs.

The initiative is not just about increasing the number of homes; it emphasizes the development of affordable and workforce housing, which is crucial in today’s economic climate. “We do not expect the city to fund the full development of this. We are talking about public-private partnerships, federal funding, state funding, looking at any resources that we can possibly use to develop these units,” stated Thanena Wilson, the city’s director of Community Development and Housing.

Wilson elaborated during a recent committee meeting that simplifying the city’s development ordinance and maintaining existing affordable housing units are also integral components of the plan. To kickstart the strategy, the city aims to preserve or construct 995 units by 2026.

This proposal represents a significant step in addressing High Point’s housing needs by leveraging various funding sources and partnerships. The focus on sustainability and affordability is expected to provide long-term benefits for residents and the broader community.
