Guilford County Democratic Party Withdraws Support from Candidate Over Controversial Posts
The political landscape in North Carolina saw a significant shift as the Guilford County Democratic Party distanced itself from its own candidate, Shelly Headen, following the re-emergence of controversial social media posts.
Party officials released a statement firmly denouncing the posts, which were attributed to Headen, the Democratic candidate for North Carolina House District 62. The posts reportedly included incendiary remarks about certain conservative states and implied that violence might be a more effective tool than peaceful protest.
“We unequivocally reject and condemn these comments,” stated the Democratic Party, emphasizing that such sentiments are contrary to their core values.
When approached for comment by WFDD, Headen expressed uncertainty about posting the remarks herself but extended an apology to those affected. Acknowledging the party’s decision, she remarked, “They’re doing what’s best for the party, and that’s what they should do. At the end of the day, we just need to get back to normalcy. Whatever it takes. If, you know, one person gets sacrificed which is me, that’s fine.”
Headen also revealed that she has been receiving death threats since the posts came to light.
Despite the controversy, Headen remains on the ballot, as voting materials have already been distributed, leaving no room for her withdrawal or replacement by another candidate. She is set to compete against the Republican incumbent, John Blust.
