Guilford County Bridge to Honor Late Sgt. Philip Dale Nix

A bridge in Guilford County is set to be renamed in memory of Sgt. Philip Dale Nix, a dedicated member of the Greensboro Police Department who lost his life under tragic circumstances. This honor is a testament to his over two decades of service to the community.

The bridge, spanning Sandy Ridge Road over Interstate 40 in Colfax, will be officially dedicated to Sgt. Nix during a ceremony scheduled for Monday afternoon. This announcement was made by the North Carolina Department of Transportation, marking a significant tribute to Nix’s contributions.

Sgt. Nix’s death occurred in December 2023 when he attempted to intervene during a criminal incident he observed at a gas station on Sandy Ridge Road. His courageous act underlines his commitment to public safety, even at the cost of his own life.

The dedication event will draw state and local officials, law enforcement personnel, and those who knew Sgt. Nix personally, including friends and family members. The community is expected to come together to honor his legacy.

As part of the ceremony arrangements, the exit ramp from I-40 onto Sandy Ridge Road will be closed starting at 1 p.m. and will remain closed for the duration of the event.
