Greensboro Faces Financial Scrutiny as Fund Balance Dips
The financial health of Greensboro is under the spotlight as the city is added to a state commission’s watch list. This action follows concerns over the city’s fund balance, prompting city leaders to consider potential budget cuts.
In response to the situation, an emergency meeting was convened by the city council to address Greensboro’s inclusion on the Unit Assistance List. The discussion was driven by the city’s shortfall in meeting the Local Government Commission’s target of a 25% fund balance, a goal described as a financial safety net by Assistant City Manager Larry Davis.
Despite being cautioned two weeks prior about the potential listing, some council members, including Mayor Pro Tem Denise Roth, expressed surprise, highlighting a communication gap between the city manager’s office and the council that became a focal point of the meeting.
The council deliberated on various budgetary adjustments, with discussions centering on whether to reduce funding for infrastructure projects such as the Washington Street bridge and a new fire station.
