Forsyth County Commission Halts Data Center Project Amidst Community Pushback
In a decisive move reflecting community sentiment, the Forsyth County Commission has rejected a proposal for a hyperscale data center campus in Rural Hall. The decision came after a thorough deliberation process involving over 400 emails and numerous public testimonies over six months.
The proposed development, known as “Project Iron Spur,” sought to transform approximately 129 acres near the town hall into a state-of-the-art data facility. However, local residents, along with the county planning board, raised significant concerns about potential environmental harm, noise, and declining property values.
The strong local opposition heavily influenced the commission’s final decision. Commissioner Gray Wilson highlighted the importance of respecting community preferences, stating, “I don’t know that we make the decision that this is something that they ought to have and we just cram it down everybody’s throat.”
While the commissioners expressed support for data centers in general, they emphasized the necessity of selecting suitable locations for such developments. Ultimately, the proposal was defeated by a vote of 5 to 2, with Don Martin and Gloria Whisenhunt being the sole supporters.
