Pipeline Project Advances Through Kernersville Park Amid Concerns
A new segment of a gas pipeline is set to traverse Triad Park, located in Kernersville, following approval from Forsyth County commissioners. This development is part of the Southeast Supply Enhancement, a substantial $1.2 billion initiative spearheaded by the Transcontinental Pipe Line Company (Transco).
Triad Park, shared ownership between Forsyth and Guilford counties, will see a portion of the pipeline laid within its grounds. Last month, the Guilford County Board of Commissioners gave their nod to a land easement agreement essential for the project’s progression.
Despite the green light, Forsyth County commissioners faced significant reservations. Key concerns revolved around potential environmental impacts on air and water quality, a perceived expedited approval timeline, and an initial compensation offer from Transco deemed inadequate at $110,000. This offer was later increased to $180,000 following discussions.
Commissioner Shai Woodbury expressed her reservations, stating, “For me, I don’t agree with the pipeline issue from an environmental standpoint.” She acknowledged the constraints faced due to Transco’s power of eminent domain, explaining the commission’s limited options in the matter.
The vote concluded with a narrow margin, passing 4-3. Construction is slated to commence within the month, with completion anticipated in approximately four months.
