“Charlotte Arborist Shares Watering Tips to Help Trees Survive Heat”

On a sultry afternoon, Charlotte’s city arborist Laurie Reid demonstrated a method to help trees endure the harsh climate. By holding up a five-gallon bucket with water trickling from small holes at its base, Reid illustrated a simple yet effective way to hydrate parched soil.

“It’s coming out nice and slow, and that’s going to be able to soak that ground,” Reid explained.

Due to ongoing water restrictions, residents in Charlotte must adhere to specific guidelines on when and how they can irrigate their lawns and gardens. The persistent drought has taken a toll on the city’s trees, making them vulnerable to pests and diseases. Additionally, the prolonged heat wave is hindering their natural cooling mechanism, known as evapotranspiration.

“They’re stressed, and then they’re not able to release a lot of that water that would also be cool,” Reid noted.

Despite restrictions on sprinkler use, hand watering remains permissible. Residents can utilize buckets to provide trees with essential moisture gradually. Reid emphasized the benefit of this method, saying, “You are giving a set amount of water. You’re not standing with a hose for a period of time and potentially using more than you need.”

As climate change continues to intensify heat waves, these tree care strategies may become increasingly necessary. Mulching is another viable option, but it requires careful execution. Reid advises against “volcano mulching,” which involves piling mulch around the tree’s base, potentially suffocating it. Instead, apply mulch to a depth of 3 inches, ensuring it does not touch the trunk, to help regulate temperature and retain moisture.
