CBP Operations May Target Asheville Amidst Immigration Concerns

Asheville “may be a targeted city” for border patrol agents, mayor says

Federal Immigration Operations May Extend to Asheville

The city of Asheville might soon find itself under the scrutiny of U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents, according to recent statements by Mayor Esther Manheimer. This development follows news that similar operations are slated to begin in Charlotte, as confirmed by Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden.

North Carolina Governor Josh Stein issued a statement addressing these potential operations, emphasizing the importance of focusing on public safety without instilling fear or creating division. “Public safety is the top priority for all of us in government – and that means fighting crime, not stoking fear or causing division,” Stein stated. He further mentioned the need to prioritize arresting violent criminals and drug traffickers, contrasting this with past activities by ICE and Border Patrol Agents in cities like Chicago.

Mayor Manheimer, through a Facebook post, expressed concern that Asheville could be chosen as a target for federal immigration enforcement. She clarified that the Asheville Police Department lacks the authority to enforce immigration laws. “We value our strong relationships with all members of our community and remain dedicated to building trust while upholding the law,” Manheimer proclaimed. She emphasized that everyone, regardless of their immigration status, should feel secure within the community.

This potential move by CBP agents in Asheville follows similar enforcement actions previously conducted in major cities such as Los Angeles and Chicago.
