Travelers at Asheville Regional Airport will now experience a fresh journey as the new terminal opens its doors today. After almost two years of construction, the expansive North Concourse has been unveiled.
Spanning 136,000 square feet, the terminal boasts floor-to-ceiling windows, fresh dining and shopping outlets, as well as seating equipped with electrical outlets. “We’re very proud,” remarked Tina Kinsey, the airport spokesperson, at a media preview. “And we can’t wait for, particularly, our region’s travelers to come in and join us in the pride. … They now have an airport that is world-class, reflecting the natural beauty of our region. And we’re just so excited.”
Upon arrival, passengers will enter as usual, but will now proceed to the right into the revamped ticket lobby before reaching a new TSA checkpoint. Escalators, stairs, or elevators then lead up to the main terminal area.
Today marks the opening of three new concessions, with two more set to open in a week. Travelers will also find new restrooms, a grand piano for local performances, and innovative electro-chromic windows designed to keep the terminal cool on sunny days.
An art gallery within the concourse will host rotating exhibits throughout the year. The present exhibition showcases works by local artists displaced by Hurricane Helene, which struck the River Arts District last year.
Gallery curator Alexandra Ingle mentioned, “Each of the pieces has a special story — either the piece itself or the artist who submitted the piece. And they were all incredibly impacted by the storm.” The displayed artworks are available for purchase, with the current exhibit running through October.
While the terminal is now operational, the airport’s overall expansion is ongoing. Some passengers will temporarily need to navigate back to the old concourse for their flights. Airport personnel will assist with directions. The entire expansion project is slated for completion in two-and-a-half years.
