A Breakthrough in 911 Dispatch Technology Averts Tragedy in Texas

On August 4, Keith Young experienced a sudden cardiac arrest at his home. He was upstairs preparing for a shower when he realized something was amiss. “I started pounding on the floor,” Keith recounted. “By the time my wife got to me, I could barely breathe. Then everything went black, and when I woke up, I was in the hospital.”
His wife, Rachel Young, with whom he has shared 41 years of marriage, witnessed the terrifying incident. She quickly dialed 911, fearing the worst. In a remarkable turn of events, a new emergency response technology played a crucial role.
The dispatcher, Randy Ruston from SAFD communications, sent Rachel a text message containing a link that activated a live video chat. This innovation allowed Randy to assess Keith’s condition through real-time visuals. “It gives us access to their microphone and camera,” Randy explained to KENS 5. “We can assess things like their heart rate, breathing, and even their skin tone—all critical for determining how urgent the situation is.”
With Randy’s guidance, Rachel performed CPR on Keith while waiting for paramedics. Due to her prompt response and the aid of the new technology, Keith was transported to the hospital in critical condition but survived.
Currently, Keith is recovering at home and expresses profound gratitude. Rachel describes the experience as “a miracle.”
