Scaled-Back Resort Plan Approved, Massive Waterpark Removed

Placer County approves scaled-back Palisades Tahoe development after years of debate

Significant Reductions to Development Plan Garner Approval

In a move that has been 15 years in the making, the board of supervisors has given the green light to a substantially downsized development proposal. The unanimous vote marks a significant shift from the original plans.

The newly approved project reflects a 70% reduction from its initial design and notably omits a large indoor waterpark, which was a key feature of the first proposal. The changes come after extensive discussions with Alterra, the resort’s owner. Notably, former critics such as Sierra Watch and Keep Tahoe Blue have now thrown their support behind the revised plan.

The first iteration of the project envisioned over 3,000 bedrooms accompanied by towering multi-story structures. However, the scale of the development faced strong opposition over the years, with numerous locals voicing their concerns about potential traffic congestion, unchecked growth, and environmental degradation.

With the latest agreement, there is a 40% decrease in the number of approved bedrooms compared to the 2024 blueprint. Additionally, the amount of commercial space has been curtailed.
