Reno and Sparks Fire Departments Join Forces Under New Leadership
The cities of Reno and Sparks have taken a collaborative step in fire safety management by approving a new leadership arrangement. Reno Fire Chief Dave Cochran will oversee both the Reno and Sparks Fire Departments, yet both entities retain their operational independence.
Chief Cochran will be accountable to the city managers of both Reno and Sparks. Any significant policy changes that affect both fire departments will need the consent of each city’s administration. This agreement is initially set for a year, with the option for annual renewal.
To manage costs, Sparks will cover 25% of the fire chief’s salary and benefits, as well as a quarter of any shared administrative expenses. This financial arrangement is part of the cities’ commitment to optimize resources and enhance their emergency response capabilities.
In a joint statement, Sparks Mayor Ed Lawson and Chief Cochran emphasized the potential to allocate resources strategically for improved emergency services. Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve highlighted the partnership as a model for governmental cooperation, particularly in life-saving services.
Mayor Schieve, reflecting on the city council meeting, noted that this agreement is a memorable aspect of her leadership, underscoring its personal significance due to a family loss in a fire incident. “You can’t put a price on life,” she expressed, stressing that financial considerations should not overshadow the value of human life.
Chief Cochran is set to begin his additional role with the Sparks Fire Department on August 3.
