Mpox Cases Resurface in Washoe County; Symptoms and Prevention Tips

Washoe County Health officials encourage caution amid two mpox cases

Recent Mpox Alert: Health Officials Advise Caution Despite Low Public Risk

In a recent update, Washoe County has reported its first mpox cases since 2022, raising concerns among health officials despite the low risk to the general population. According to Nancy Diao, the division director of population health, there is a likelihood that additional cases are not being reported.

The groups identified as being at the highest risk include sex workers, individuals with numerous sexual partners, and healthcare workers who are treating infected patients. For the broader community, however, the threat remains minimal.

Mpox symptoms are varied and can encompass feelings of general unwellness, fever, swollen lymph nodes, and a distinctive rash often characterized by a central indentation. Diao emphasizes the importance of consulting a healthcare provider when experiencing such symptoms. “All rashes are not mpox. We’re still having measles around, we still have general chickenpox, so definitely go to your provider to get tested and then take the precautions that you should be taking to protect everyone else around you,” Diao stated.

Preventative options such as vaccines and treatments are accessible. In severe instances, prolonged mpox infections can result in organ failure, along with other serious health issues like extensive scarring, pneumonia, and inflammation of the heart or brain.
