Man Stays with Dogs Amid Blaze, Urges Subsidized Emergency Lodging

Stead community members start going home after four-day evacuation due to Hawk Fire

Brennan Blackford’s Experience During the Blaze: A Story of Resourcefulness and Resilience

With the looming danger of a nearby fire, Brennan Blackford found himself in a unique situation as he sat on the grass outside a McDonald’s, accompanied by his three loyal border collies, Oakley, Willow, and Leaf. Although his home remained untouched, the threat was uncomfortably close, just a few streets away.

Confronted with the challenge of finding a place to rest, Blackford spent the first night in his truck, parked in a warehouse lot. He prioritized the comfort of his dogs, explaining, “I actually wanted to give them more room, so I laid a sweater in the bed of my truck, and I slept back there. I let the dogs have the car so that they were more comfortable.”

Finding pet-friendly accommodations proved to be difficult, but he eventually secured a room at SureStay by the Reno Airport for $59. Highlighting a broader issue, Blackford noted the financial strain faced by many during emergencies, saying, “A lot of people didn’t have somewhere to stay the first night, and the subsequent nights. There’s a lot of people out here struggling, and 100 to 200 bucks a night, I mean, that could be their food budget for the month. They could be loading up credit cards.”

Though not active on social media, Blackford relied on Facebook to keep abreast of the fire response. As he checked his phone, he noted that power was still not restored. Upon returning home, his immediate concern is to check for any damage caused by melted water from his fridge and freezer.
