HSTT Launches Program to Help Pet Owners Afford Vet Care

Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe launches new pet care grant program

New Initiative Supports Pet Owners with Veterinary Costs

In an effort to keep pets with their families and prevent them from entering shelters, the Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) has introduced a novel program to assist pet owners facing financial challenges with essential veterinary care.

The Community Pet Financial Assistance Program is specifically designed for those residing in Truckee, Incline Village, South Lake Tahoe, and the counties of Sierra, Eastern Placer, Eastern Nevada, and Southeastern Plumas. This initiative provides grants to cover non-emergency veterinary expenses for those struggling financially.

Kara Carstensen, who manages outreach programs at HSTT, emphasized the significance of this program by stating, “Pets are family, and they belong with the people who love them.” She highlighted that accessing necessary veterinary care can be particularly challenging for low-income, senior, or disabled pet owners.

Grants are allocated based on the urgency of the medical situation and the financial need of the pet owner. The program does not cover long-term treatments, cosmetic procedures, or previously incurred veterinary bills. To qualify, pets must have a positive prognosis and be spayed or neutered. All funding requests must receive prior approval and are paid directly to the veterinarian providing the care.

The HSTT advises pet owners to submit applications promptly, as early intervention can often prevent the escalation of health issues into more serious conditions.
