Efforts to Uncover Lake Tahoe’s Water Clarity Mystery
Lake Tahoe, renowned for its picturesque waters, has faced a persistent decline in water clarity since the late 1960s. The situation reached a plateau in the late 1990s, prompting experts to question why clarity hasn’t improved despite extensive conservation efforts. Stephanie Hampton, director of TERC, expressed her concerns: “We’re really asking why is the clarity not improving, given all of the amazing conservation and restoration and management that goes on up here?” The center is investigating various factors, including rising temperatures and wildfire impacts, as potential contributors to the issue.
As wildfires become more frequent, researchers have intensified their focus on understanding the effect of ash on the lake’s microscopic inhabitants. This new research direction involves analyzing the lake’s microbial life and exploring potential invasive species using advanced genetic techniques.
