Unveiling the Hidden Depths of Lake Tahoe: A Cleanup Initiative
While Lake Tahoe is celebrated for its stunningly clear blue waters, a hidden reality beneath the surface tells a different story. A team of divers from Clean Up the Lake embarked on an ambitious project to address this unseen issue, capturing their journey in the documentary 72 Miles.
The initiative spanned 2021 and 2022, with divers meticulously covering all seventy-two miles of the lake’s underwater shoreline. During this period, they faced numerous challenges, including freezing waters, adverse weather conditions, and disruptions due to the Caldor Fire evacuations and heavy snowstorms.
The extensive cleanup effort resulted in the removal of over 25,000 pounds of debris from Lake Tahoe. The project evolved beyond its initial mission of trash removal, as Colin West, the founder and film director, explained. “This entire film really chronicles those hardships and the passion and the dedication that the team had to really protect our own backyard,” West shared.
Throughout the cleanup, the divers discovered various items beneath the water, including old cans, plastic waste, and discarded fishing gear. The documentary showcases these findings, shedding light on the environmental impact beneath the lake’s surface.
Building on the success of their initial efforts, Clean Up the Lake is now embarking on a second cleanup mission around Lake Tahoe, continuing their commitment to preserving the lake’s natural beauty.
