Investigation Continues into Omaha Streetcar Route Collapse
The mystery deepens in Omaha as officials remain perplexed over the cause of a significant void along a streetcar route that led to a sidewalk’s disappearance and a partial building collapse in June. The decision to either demolish or repair the affected structure now rests with the building’s proprietors.
At a recent press conference, Steve Jensen, the interim executive director of the Omaha Streetcar Authority, emphasized the city’s commitment to finding a resolution that benefits all stakeholders. “We know there are two options,” Jensen stated. “One is to fix the building, fix the damage to the building, or a second option would be to tear it down if that was the preference of the owners.”
In the meantime, Jensen reassured the public that other buildings in the Blackstone neighborhood remain secure and intact. This assurance comes as the city had previously issued two property violation notices to the owner of the compromised building, located near 38th and Farnam streets. This site was once occupied by Brothers Lounge, a well-known cocktail bar.
Expressing their concerns, Brothers Lounge took to Facebook on July 30, writing, “every time it rains, we are terrified.” The post highlighted issues with drainage in the vicinity and criticized the city for its perceived inaction in safeguarding the structure.
Questions have surfaced regarding the potential impact of streetcar construction on the collapse. However, Jensen clarified that the city’s current priority is to address and rectify the situation. “That’s a whole separate issue in terms of who’s responsible, how do we – what do we do about that?” he remarked, emphasizing, “Our focus right now is getting this done as quickly as we can and finding ways to work with them to get it done.”
