The Nebraska State Capitol is poised for a potential security overhaul, according to a recent announcement from the head of the Legislature’s Executive Board. This move comes amid growing concerns over political violence across the nation.
On Tuesday, Sen. Ben Hansen revealed that the Nebraska Legislature is actively working to bolster security measures at the state capitol. This initiative is driven by recent incidents of political violence in neighboring states and throughout the country, prompting a proactive stance to ensure the safety of governmental officials, state employees, and the visiting public.
Hansen stated that collaborative efforts are underway with Capitol Security and the executive and judicial branches to assess and identify the necessary enhancements to the current security protocols. This cooperative approach aims to address potential vulnerabilities and ensure comprehensive safety measures.
While significant changes to the building’s security infrastructure are planned for implementation in 2027, Hansen noted that interim steps might be introduced before then to safeguard legislative processes. These measures are anticipated to be in place ahead of the Legislature’s scheduled reconvening on January 7.
