Nebraska’s Minimum Wage on the Rise: What It Means for Workers and Businesses
Beginning January 1, Nebraska will see its minimum wage rise from $13.50 to $15 per hour. This change places Nebraska among 18 states adopting higher wage standards, as reported by Business Insider.
The wage increase, set to benefit up to 139,000 workers across Nebraska, stems from a ballot initiative that received strong voter support in 2022. However, some business owners express concerns over potential financial impacts.
In Holdrege, DeEtte Bailey, a co-owner of “Gifts and Things,” shared her perspective. “We gift wrap complimentary here,” Bailey explained. “So, I’m paying my high school girls, I’m going to be paying them $15 an hour to wrap a gift. And I’m never going to charge for gift wrapping. That’s just something that people come here for and they love it, so we have to reflect it somewhere else.”
The Economic Policy Institute of Nebraska highlights that the $1.50 per hour wage increase equates to an average annual salary boost of $980 for affected workers.
Meanwhile, efforts by State Senator Jane Raybould to maintain lower wages for teenage employees faced hurdles in the Legislature earlier this year. The topic is anticipated to resurface in upcoming legislative discussions.
