Huskers Triumph in Overtime Against Iowa, Secure Historic Season
In a thrilling overtime showdown, the No. 9 Nebraska men’s basketball team emerged victorious over Iowa with an 84-75 win at home on Sunday. This win marked a significant turnaround for the Huskers, who previously faced defeat against the Hawkeyes in Iowa City this February, ending that match 57-52.
Head coach Fred Hoiberg reflected on the team’s determination, noting, “All the seniors today were saying, ‘We’re not losing today. We can’t go out in a bad way.’” This resolve was evident during the match at Lincoln’s Pinnacle Bank Arena, especially as the Huskers experienced a dramatic second half.
Initially leading by 11 points with eight minutes remaining, Nebraska saw its advantage slip away as Iowa rallied back, outpacing them 44-40 after halftime. The Hawkeyes’ comeback necessitated overtime, where the Huskers’ strategic three-point plays secured their win.
This victory punctuates a remarkable regular season for Nebraska. Under Hoiberg’s guidance, the team achieved 26 wins, setting a record for the most regular-season victories in the program’s history. This feat ties them with the 1990-91 team for overall wins. Additionally, Nebraska made headlines by breaking into the AP Top 25 poll at No. 7 in February, later climbing to No. 5, the highest ranking the team has ever achieved. Previously, the top ranking was No. 8, set by the 1965-66 team.
Following this triumph, Nebraska secured the No. 2 seed for the upcoming Big Ten conference tournament, set to commence on Tuesday in Chicago. The Huskers will have a break until their first game on Friday.
The outcome against Iowa also places Nebraska favorably for Selection Sunday, impacting their prospects in the NCAA tournament and seeding announcements.
