The excitement is building as the NCAA Volleyball Tournament kicks off, with Nebraska leading the charge as the No. 1 overall seed. The tournament, which begins Thursday, features top contenders like the University of Kentucky, Texas, and Pitt, promising thrilling matches ahead.
On Friday, Nebraska will take on Long Island University, hoping to maintain its perfect season. The Nebraska quadrant includes formidable teams such as No. 2 seed Louisville, No. 3 seed Texas A&M, No. 4 seed Kansas, and No. 5 seed Miami, among others. The team is riding high after a remarkable sweep against Ohio State during their senior night.
Nebraska setter Bergan Reilly, in an interview during ESPN’s special selection show, attributed the team’s undefeated run to head coach Dani Busboom Kelly’s dynamic strategies. “She wants to change it up – change up the routes and keep the defense on their toes,” Reilly stated. “It’s been really fun to set, and our hitters have done a great job of adjusting to that.”
Meanwhile, No. 12 Creighton prepares to face Northern Colorado in Omaha on Thursday, positioned in the No. 3 seed Kentucky quadrant alongside strong competitors like No. 2 seed Arizona State and No. 4 seed USC. Creighton, who reclaimed their momentum mid-season, has climbed back to No. 12 in the American Volleyball Coaches Association rankings.
The championship match is set for December 21 in Kansas City, with Nebraska and Creighton both securing automatic bids following their respective conference victories. Nebraska, boasting a 30-match winning streak, clinched the Big Ten Title after defeating No. 17 Indiana, marking its third consecutive conference championship.
Historically, this season is a significant milestone for Nebraska, being only the third time the team has completed a regular season undefeated, a feat previously achieved in 1994 and 2000. The Huskers also set a conference record, becoming the first Big Ten team to finish 20-0 since Penn State in 2009, while maintaining their top spot in the AVCA rankings throughout the season.
Creighton, under the guidance of new head coach Brian Rosen, has also been on a winning streak, securing their sixth consecutive Big East championship by sweeping Xavier. This victory continues their impressive run, with the team now having won 11 out of the last 12 Big East tournaments, marking the longest active streak in league history.
Both teams are not only making waves in their conferences but are also seeing their players gain recognition on a national level. Recently, players from Nebraska and Creighton were selected in the National Volleyball League draft, with Rebekah Allick expected to join the LOVB Volleyball league’s Omaha-based team.
The NCAA Volleyball Tournament promises to deliver high-intensity action as these top teams compete for the national title, showcasing the talent and tenacity that have brought them this far.
