Nebraska AD Troy Dannen to Keynote 2026 Governor’s Summit in Kearney

Husker boss Dannen replacing Sasse as keynote at Governor's Summit

In an unexpected turn of events, Nebraska Athletic Director Troy Dannen is set to headline the 2026 Governor’s Summit in Kearney, stepping in as the opening keynote speaker. This change comes after former Sen. Ben Sasse had to withdraw from the role due to ongoing health challenges.

Sasse, who is grappling with stage 4 pancreatic cancer, recently shared on social media his recovery progress post-surgery for liver tumors. He is now embarking on a new chemotherapy treatment, necessitating his absence from the summit.

This year’s summit will prominently feature a Husker theme, with Dannen joining the list of notable speakers, including NU basketball head coach Fred Hoiberg. Hoiberg had been previously confirmed as a key speaker, further solidifying the event’s focus on Nebraska’s athletic prowess.

Since joining the Huskers in March 2024, Dannen has been influential in his role as athletic director. His appointment follows his tenure at the University of Washington and earlier leadership positions at Tulane University and the University of Northern Iowa, his alma mater.

Gov. Jim Pillen expressed enthusiasm about Dannen’s participation, stating, “Troy Dannen has been a great fit to lead Husker athletics. His vision, leadership, and hustle have the Huskers on the fast track to where they belong — at the very pinnacle of collegiate sports. I look forward to hearing from Troy at this year’s Summit.”

The Governor’s Summit kicks off on Monday with a statewide update titled “6 Regions, One Nebraska.” Gov. Pillen will address the attendees on Tuesday, followed by Dannen’s keynote in the morning and Hoiberg’s address in the afternoon. The event will also feature a Youth Summit, adding to the comprehensive agenda.
