Lincoln Surgeon Loses License Amid Sexual Harassment Allegations
A well-known orthopedic surgeon in Lincoln has been stripped of his medical license and faces a financial penalty following allegations of sexual harassment and related misconduct.
The Nebraska Attorney General’s Office announced that Dr. Steven Shannon will be unable to practice medicine for a minimum of two years. This decision comes alongside a mandated $20,000 civil fine, as part of a settlement with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.
Originally, Dr. Shannon was set to appear at a disciplinary hearing later this month.
Last month, Attorney General Mike Hilgers submitted a disciplinary petition against Shannon. The petition cited accusations of “immoral or dishonorable conduct, unprofessional conduct, failure to report a loss of employment and privileges, sexual misconduct, and disruptive behavior.”
The petition detailed claims that Shannon fostered a hostile work environment for nurses and support staff during 2024 and 2025 by making inappropriate sexual remarks and engaging in a sexual relationship with a clinic staff member directly under his supervision.
As a result of these allegations, Bryan Health revoked Shannon’s practice privileges and subsequently terminated his employment. The petition noted that Shannon did not inform Nebraska DHHS of this termination within the mandated 30-day period.
Furthermore, it alleged that when Shannon sought new employment at another hospital, he failed to disclose both his termination and the suspension of his privileges. Instead, he allegedly fabricated a verification-of-employment letter that included the name and signature of a Bryan Health official.
In response to these issues, Bryan Health stated that immediate action was taken once the allegations against Shannon were brought to the attention of its executive leadership.
