Eastern Nebraska is bracing for intense heat and humidity this Tuesday, with residents advised to prepare for soaring temperatures.
Heat Advisory Issued
The National Weather Service has announced a heat advisory for the eastern third of Nebraska, effective from 1-9 p.m. Central time. The forecast predicts temperatures climbing into the mid to upper 90s, with the heat index potentially reaching up to 110 degrees.
Cooling Centers Available
Kerry Kernen, Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Director, confirmed that the city’s libraries, recreation centers, and senior centers will serve as cooling centers to provide relief from the oppressive heat.
In Lincoln, Tuesday’s forecasted high is 98 degrees, marking the hottest day of the year so far for the Capital City.
Highs in Western Nebraska
Further west, temperatures in McCook and Imperial are expected to reach 100 degrees, with several other locales nearing the upper 90s. Due to significantly lower humidity levels, the heat index will not be as extreme, and there are no heat-related advisories in these areas.
Wildfire Risk in the Panhandle
Meanwhile, the Panhandle is under a red flag warning from noon-9 p.m. Mountain time on Tuesday. This alert is due to a combination of strong winds, low humidity, and the potential for gusts exceeding 30 miles per hour, conditions that significantly heighten the wildfire risk.
