Challenges Emerge at National High School Finals Rodeo in Lincoln
The recent National High School Finals Rodeo held in Lincoln witnessed some unexpected challenges, as attendees took to social media to voice their frustrations. Complaints primarily focused on issues such as water shortages and electrical outages at the Sandhills Global Event Center.
The event concluded on Saturday amid scorching 100-degree temperatures, with many campers relying heavily on their air conditioners. Ron Bohaty, the managing director of the Sandhills Global Event Center, revealed that while the campground’s electrical system had been upgraded with new breakers and panels a year prior, not all necessary work was completed to standard.
Bohaty explained, “Unfortunately, I don’t believe all the work was completed the way it needed to be.” He added that problems arose because the main breakers, equipped with programmable digital screens, were set at 400 amps from the factory instead of the required 1,200 amps.
Compounding the problem, numerous campers attempted to connect 50-amp trailers with multiple air conditioners to 30-amp power outlets. This, coupled with extreme heat over several days, led to circuit overloads. To address the excessive demand, Lincoln Electric System increased voltage from its substation, which was operating at 150% capacity. Additionally, on-site electricians had to temporarily cut power to portions of the campground to rewire circuits and manage the load.
Funding from various sources has been channeled into improving the event center’s infrastructure. More than $5 million from the American Rescue Plan Act in 2021 was allocated for campsite and electrical development, while a recent Shovel-Ready Grant from the state Department of Economic Development provided another $5 million. These investments have facilitated restroom renovations, new HVAC units, a sewer system overhaul, and upgrades to concrete, lighting, and fans, according to Bohaty.
“I think the money has been used effectively,” commented Lancaster County Commissioner Rick Vest. “It has upgraded the facility enormously.” Vest, whose district includes the area west of the Sandhills Global Event Center, expressed confidence that the center, the Lancaster County Agricultural Society, and the National High School Rodeo Association will use this year’s experience to host an even better event in 2027.
Attendees also reported issues with standing water, which Bohaty attributed to necessary repairs after a hydrant incident. While some competitors desired a spigot at every campsite, Bohaty noted that such expectations were unrealistic. Despite these challenges, he expressed satisfaction with the rodeo’s execution and the performance of the competitors.
Bohaty concluded by affirming the event center’s preparedness to host the rodeo again in 2027, stating, “I believe that we gave them what they asked for on the arenas, to be able to be competitive with each other, and really show off what they can do and what they’ve worked for for many years growing up.”
