President Santa J. Ono has appointed James DeVaney as the special advisor to the president for academic innovation. This new role aims to advance life-changing education, a key component of the Vision 2034 strategic plan. DeVaney, currently the founding executive director of the Center for Academic Innovation and associate vice provost for academic innovation, will continue collaborating closely with university leadership.
As special advisor, DeVaney will focus on lifelong learning, AI in education, and workforce development, supporting U-M’s mission to offer equitable, lifelong educational opportunities. “James is a nationally recognized leader in academic innovation,” Ono stated. “His vision will be invaluable as we work to achieve our Vision 2034 goals.”
DeVaney has significantly transformed U-M’s educational landscape through the Center for Academic Innovation, enhancing teaching, learning, and expanding the university’s global impact. The center has fostered interdisciplinary partnerships worldwide, utilizing innovative design and technology. In his advisory role, DeVaney will continue to champion initiatives aligned with U-M’s strategic priorities, particularly in leveraging AI.

Before joining U-M in 2014, DeVaney co-founded global and digital education practices at Huron Consulting Group, establishing its presence in the Middle East and North Africa. He has advised over 75 universities across 15 countries, bringing extensive strategic expertise to his new role.
