Unexpected Tornado Transforms Wedding Celebration into a Unique Event
April 8, 2026
An unanticipated tornado warning led to an extraordinary convergence of a wedding ceremony and a volleyball tournament, leaving fond memories for a couple and numerous strangers alike.
Visha and Ankeet Shah
While celebrating their significant wedding event at the Oklahoma City Convention Center, Visha and Ankeet Shah were unexpectedly interrupted. As they enjoyed their traditional Garba dance, which held special significance for Visha, sudden sirens and halted music signaled a tornado warning.
“I remember them saying, ‘We have an emergency! There’s a tornado watch happening and we need to take shelter and go downstairs,’” Ankeet recalled.
Despite the potential for chaos, the situation evolved into something extraordinary.
With close to 400 guests present, the wedding planner and venue team swiftly facilitated a safe evacuation to a lower level within 10 to 15 minutes. The guests soon discovered they were not alone, sharing the space with participants from a simultaneous volleyball tournament.
A new atmosphere began to form.
“We started kind of chatting with one of the coaches, and before we knew it, the girls ran onto the court taking pics with the couple and started chanting and lifting them up,” recounted wedding planner Sydney Ore.
The OKC Heat 15 National Volleyball Team members actively participated in the festivities.
“The girls were basically singing with us, dancing with us. They made us feel like royalty,” said Ankeet.
“We joined into the party,” added player Kinley Anderson.
The incident, which could have been distressing, transformed into a heartwarming example of camaraderie and joy. The team even assisted in recreating the Garba dance, this time without music.
“There’s usually music playing and people singing along,” Visha explained. “But we did a silent dance… and we looked over and saw the volleyball girls across the net doing it with us. That was super fun and memorable.”
Visha’s emotions shifted quickly during the night.
“I was crying a little bit, but it was no longer sad tears,” she said. “It was these joyful tears of complete strangers encouraging me — and encouraging us.”
In a scenario where fear could have prevailed, joy took over, creating a wedding memory that surpassed expectations.
Visha aptly summarized the night: “When things look rough and scary, we can come together and make it joyful.”
