Empowering Ex-Offenders Through Fashion: The Story of Inside Out Clothing

Unleashing creative freedom through fashion design, Inside Out clothing is a bold label with a unique mission. This innovative brand is entirely designed and produced by ex-offenders, offering a fresh start and a platform for self-expression.

Inside Out Clothing was created by Greg McKenzie, a BBC journalist who was driven to take action by his childhood friends’ experiences. These friends, who grew up in the care system, later found themselves in prison. McKenzie believed in providing mentoring and opportunities to these individuals, intending to disrupt the cycle of reoffending.

He observed that many young people in prison demonstrate exceptional creativity and business acumen. “They just need a bit of guidance. We all make mistakes and some are bigger than others. This is about helping them correct their wrongs, live a fulfilled life and be part of society,” McKenzie stated.

Beyond crafting their future through fashion design, the trainees at Inside Out receive hands-on experience in social media, content creation, and enterprise operations. This holistic approach equips them with relevant skills for a successful future.

Inside Out’s recent standout designers include Martallus Alfred, who created a rose-themed streetwear line to symbolize new beginnings, and Chanel Pinnock, who turned her past struggles into inspiration for her Locked In range. The designs serve as a testament to their transformative journeys and their determination to redefine their narratives through fashion.
