New Software Rapidly Detects Heart Disease
A ground-breaking tool that can detect heart disease in mere seconds promises to revolutionize the trajectory of the health condition for millions of patients worldwide, according to experts in the field.
This innovative heart disease detection tool, a product of intense research at Imperial College London, thoroughly analyses Electrocardiograms (ECGs) for invaluable data that even the most experienced human cardiologists may miss.
ECGs, which document the heart’s electrical activity, have proven their worth as reliable mediums for diagnosing heart attacks and irregular heart rhythms. Unfortunately, ECGs have been ineffective in detecting heart disease, a global health crisis that claims 20 million lives annually. To identify heart disease, patients typically require an echocardiogram, which often involves months-long waiting periods.
The research team at Imperial College London, led by Dr. Arunashis Sau, aimed to elevate the capabilities of ECGs beyond human limits. “Our goal was to explore the hidden potential of ECGs to accomplish tasks that no cardiologist, regardless of their expertise, could achieve,” shares Dr. Sau.
In an extensive trial involving 67,000 patients, the heart disease-detecting software demonstrated its precision and reliability, successfully identifying up to 93% of heart disease cases. These promising results were unveiled at the annual congress of the European Society of Cardiology held in Munich, Germany.
Professor of Cardiology at Imperial College, Fu Siong Ng, anticipates a bright future for this novel tool, envisioning a shift in the perception of ECGs from a simple screening instrument to one of the most informative tests in medical science. Echoing his sentiments, the British Heart Foundation’s Clinical Director, Dr. Sonya Babu-Narayan, accentuates the life-saving potential of early diagnosis and treatment for heart diseases.
