The Unveiling of Fenix: Rotterdam’s New Migration Museum

Located near the Rotterdam dock, where Albert Einstein once embarked to build a new life in America, a new museum dedicated to the art of migration was inaugurated this week.

The Fenix Museum, the heart of a rejuvenation project in the harbour-side neighborhood of Katendrecht, pays homage to the area’s past as Rotterdam’s former red-light district and the largest Chinatown in Europe. The opening of this museum is particularly poignant given the recent rise of anti-immigrant sentiment in Europe.

Esmee Köhler, a representative of the museum, during a preview visit last year, made it clear that the museum’s mission is not to influence opinions about migration, but rather to expand people’s perspectives on the issue. “We strive to enrich people’s understanding of migration,” said Köhler.

The museum, a masterpiece designed by renowned Chinese architect Ma Yansong, launched with three distinctive exhibitions. One such exhibit is ‘Suitcase Labyrinth’, a powerful display of 2,000 suitcases, each telling the unique story of international migration.

Beyond showcasing exhibits, the Fenix Museum also houses a massive indoor city square, or ‘Plein’, on the ground floor. This space aims to promote connection and cultural exchange, hosting a variety of cultural events organised by the diverse communities of Rotterdam throughout the year. Museum director, Anna Kremers said, “Our goal is to create a welcoming space for everyone.”
