On a routine drive to his job, sixteen-year-old Randy Gerlach spotted a car lodged in a ditch along a rural road near Morrison, Illinois. Unsure whether the driver had merely veered off the road or if a more serious incident had occurred, Gerlach felt compelled to investigate.

“I wasn’t sure if something actually happened or if [the driver] just kind of accidentally went too far on the shoulder and just went in,” Gerlach shared.

Despite his uncertainty, he chose to act on his intuition and returned to check on the vehicle after initially driving past it.

“I turned around in town because I figured by then, if it was an accident and they didn’t mean to, they would’ve been gone by then, and they weren’t.”

Upon returning, Gerlach discovered an unconscious woman inside the car. He immediately called for emergency assistance, and responders quickly transported her to the hospital.

Medical professionals later confirmed the critical nature of the situation, acknowledging that a delay of just 20 minutes could have resulted in the woman’s death.

Gerlach humbly reflected on his actions, saying, “Just right place at the right time, and I actually did the right thing and didn’t just keep going.”

He offers a straightforward but impactful piece of advice: “Go with your gut.”

This incident serves as a powerful reminder of how a seemingly insignificant decision to help can save a life. Randy Gerlach’s swift action underscores the importance of trusting one’s instincts and taking time to assist those in need.
