Behind the Scenes at the Olympics
Q: You served as the equipment manager for Team USA. How was that experience?
TEDDY: Being chosen among many American equipment managers was an incredible honor. Chris Scoppetto and I took on the responsibility of supporting our nation’s top athletes, which was an indescribable experience. We embraced the challenge and cherished each moment.
The Olympic Challenge
Q: Was working at the Olympic level different from your role with the Florida Panthers?
TEDDY: The Olympics presented unique challenges. With the top 25 players, each with specific needs, we had to adapt quickly without the usual support staff. Typically, I manage a staff of six or seven, but in Milan, it was just Chris and me handling all tasks. We reverted to our roots, managing everything from water bottles to equipment setup, which was both demanding and rewarding.
Adjusting to New Dynamics
Q: How did you prepare for working with a new team at the Olympics?
TEDDY: My experience at the 4 Nations tournament a year prior served as a dress rehearsal for the Olympics. I maintained detailed notes on each player’s preferences by consulting with equipment managers across the NHL. This preparation helped me anticipate and meet the needs of our athletes, ensuring a smoother transition during the Olympics.
A Balancing Act
Q: How did you manage the workload alongside your regular duties?
TEDDY: With extensive travel, I used time on planes and in hotels to focus on preparations. Custom gear for players required months of coordination. Ensuring each athlete had the right equipment, broken in and ready, was crucial for their performance in Milan.
Team USA’s Journey to Victory
Q: What was your perspective on the team’s success and expectations?
TEDDY: We were confident in our team’s abilities, though nothing is guaranteed in sports. The anticipation of a U.S. versus Canada showdown materialized, and we lived through each game intensely. Watching Jack Hughes score the winning goal in overtime was a highlight, especially given his past injuries. It was a well-deserved moment for him.
Reflections on Growth and Success
Q: How did your early experiences shape your career path?
TEDDY: My career began with humble tasks like opening arena doors for visiting teams at dawn. This foundational work ethic, rooted in Northeast Pennsylvania, was pivotal. The camaraderie and support from mentors like Jeff Barrett transformed a part-time role into a full-time career. I’ve since won three Stanley Cups and Olympic gold, achievements I once only dreamed of.
Q: Are you content with how your career unfolded?
TEDDY: My career trajectory, from aspiring detective to achieving success in hockey, has been unexpected yet fulfilling. Being the youngest head equipment manager in both the AHL and NHL, and fulfilling my Olympic dream, has been a testament to perseverance and opportunity.
