A 73-year-old man from Conway, South Carolina owes his life to two courageous strangers who intervened during a perilous incident on his journey home. This life-saving event unfolded when Steve Howell was on his way back to Bucksport last Saturday afternoon. Howell’s day took an unexpected and dangerous turn when the trailer hitched to his 1977 Ford truck began to sway uncontrollably around 5 p.m.

What began as a routine trip quickly escalated into chaos. “The truck spun around and did a 180 and headed for the ditch,” Howell recounted, explaining how the vehicle flipped, leaving him with dislocated shoulders and a hip injury.

Incapacitated and trapped in the overturned vehicle, Howell watched helplessly as smoke started billowing from beneath the hood. The situation grew dire as the smoke turned into flames. “I knew if I didn’t get out I was going to die,” he said, acknowledging his complete helplessness as the fire intensified.

Fearing an imminent explosion with the fire nearing the fuel tank, Howell was convinced he was facing his final moments. “What was going through my mind was I was going to burn to death,” he expressed.

As desperation set in, Howell turned to prayer for deliverance. His prayers were answered when he suddenly noticed the open sky above as two strangers appeared at his window. “I looked up next to the driver’s side window and I saw the blue sky,” Howell said. “And then I saw two guys looking down through the window at me.”

Without hesitation, these two men, unknown to Howell, took swift action. “They pulled me out of the truck… burning truck… just in time,” Howell explained, emphasizing the selflessness of his rescuers. Despite being complete strangers, these men risked their own safety to extract Howell from the burning vehicle.

The daring rescue was completed mere moments before the fire consumed the truck entirely and began spreading to the nearby woods. Emergency services arrived shortly after, but the critical intervention had already been made by these two heroes.

Reflecting on the incident, Howell expressed certainty in the divine timing of the rescue. “God sent them along at the right time at the last minute, or I would not be here today,” he stated, grateful for the second chance he was given by the strangers’ brave actions.
