Community Rallies to Support Elderly Man Working Long Hours for Wife’s Cancer Treatment
September 25, 2026
An elderly man in his 80s was tirelessly working long shifts delivering lost luggage to cover the expenses arising from his wife’s cancer treatment when a bystander noticed his struggle and decided to intervene.
Don Johnson, aged 81, was captured by a Ring camera while carrying luggage up stairs in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, working as an independent contractor to support his wife Josephine, who is battling cancer.
Despite working 14-hour shifts and traveling vast distances, even to neighboring states like Oklahoma, Don found it difficult to keep up with the ever-increasing costs of healthcare and daily expenses.
During one of his deliveries, a woman encountered Don and offered her assistance with the luggage, leading to a conversation where he disclosed the financial strain due to his wife’s illness.
Their situation was dire, as they had moved in with their daughter to cope with the rising costs of groceries and medical bills, which insurance could not fully cover.
Moved by Don’s story, the woman initiated a GoFundMe campaign and launched a TikTok page titled “Help Don Retire” to reach a wider audience.
Her efforts resulted in an overwhelming response, raising approximately $700,000, which provided significant relief to the couple.
“I’m still stunned that people responded,” Josephine expressed. “I wasn’t expecting any response.”
Don was equally surprised by the generosity. “It was an amazing thing she did for me, for us,” he said. “I never expected to see her again after that day.”
The viral TikTok post, featuring Don’s story, highlighted his annual journey of driving over 200,000 miles to deliver lost luggage, in a bid to keep up with the crushing medical bills.
@helpdonretire His name is Don. He is 81 years old and puts over 200,000 miles a year on his car delivering lost airline luggage because it’s the only job that will hire him. He isn’t doing this by choice—his beautiful wife of 51 years, Josephine, is currently fighting a severe battle against pancreatic cancer. The medical bills are crushing them and his car keeps breaking down. At 81, he should be home holding her hand, not lifting bags that weigh half as much as he does on the highway. I started a GoFundMe as their local neighbor to get Don home. Please help us share his story and get him off the road. 💔👇Link to help Don retire is pinned in comment section!

Don’s vehicle had also started to show signs of wear and was in need of repairs, causing him to reduce his work hours.
After decades of marriage, Josephine noted that these events highlighted her husband’s unwavering commitment through difficult times, echoing the vows of “for better or worse.”
“I’m so happy that he turned out to be the man he is,” she mentioned in an interview with NBCDFW.
Don remains focused on Josephine’s well-being. “I love her dearly, and I want her to be well,” he stated. He is also deeply grateful to the stranger and those who joined her efforts.
“It restores my faith in people,” Don reflected. “For her to do that was a miracle.”
Inspired by the kindness he received, Don hopes to one day reciprocate and assist others in need.
“I look forward to the day that I can help people just like I’m being helped now.”
