In a small gesture that led to a nationwide outpouring of support, Sam Restifo of Saginaw, Michigan, took in two boys who needed care. After their story hit the airwaves, people from all over the nation came forward to assist the trio in starting anew.

The journey began in February 2025, when two boys, aged 14 and 12, were unexpectedly left at Restifo’s doorstep by an acquaintance. From that moment, Sam has been their provider, striving to offer the consistency they lacked.

Despite his efforts, challenges persisted. The boys risked separation in the foster system due to limited family ties, and their school attendance suffered because Sam lacked legal guardianship rights to enroll them.

In addition to bureaucratic hurdles, the trio faced living conditions without running water and had to rely on a generator for electricity after the power was cut.

“If I decided I didn’t want to, there are no homes for them, and they would split up,” Sam shared with ABC12.

Their plight captured hearts across the country following a report by a local news station, prompting strangers to offer assistance.

A GoFundMe campaign has been instrumental, amassing over $15,000 to help Sam manage the boys’ needs, household expenses, and potential legal fees as he seeks guardianship.

“I just got money; it’s all going towards the house and the kids,” Sam stated.

These contributions have already begun to transform their lives. Sam anticipates restoring utilities in the home and is making strides to reintegrate the boys into school while also ensuring they have adequate clothing and footwear.

“We are going to get them a whole bunch of clothes and shoes,” he noted.

The ripple effect of this support extends to Sam’s gutter business, which has seen renewed interest, offering further stability for the family.

Yet, for Sam, the experience transcends financial relief. He has formed a deep connection with the boys, expressing, “I think they have helped me as much as I have helped them.”

What began as one man’s refusal to forsake two boys has since blossomed into a larger narrative of community and compassion, illustrating the profound impact of collective goodwill.
