A Festival Experience Transforms into an Unforgettable Friendship for an Autistic Man

A young man with autism experienced an unexpected and heartwarming adventure when he attended a music festival solo, only to be embraced by a group of strangers who turned his weekend into a life-altering event.

Adam James, a 24-year-old with autism and ADHD, always dreamed of attending Boomtown Fair in Hampshire. Despite working diligently to save for the event, his family feared the five-day festival might overwhelm him.
“I’ve always put it off because I’ve never had anyone to go with,” Adam shared, voicing his hesitance.
His father, Andy, even planned to rescue him if things went awry. However, Adam’s journey took an unexpected turn when he encountered a group of festival-goers from Bristol.
While setting up his tent, Adam had a simple encounter with the group, leading them to invite him to join them.
Ciaran Herniman, one of the group members, explained, “I couldn’t live with myself letting him be on his own so we took him in.”
This act of kindness transformed Adam’s experience, allowing him to form connections he had longed for.
“I think I’ve found my people.”
Adam expressed his newfound sense of belonging and even felt comfortable sharing details of his autism with the group, something he rarely does.
“He just opened up to me in the tent and said ‘I’ve got high levels of autism just to let you know’,” Ciaran recalled, responding supportively, “we’re all different in our own way, none of us would even think about judging you for that.”
The festival, which might have been an isolating experience, instead became a memorable occasion filled with friendship.
Adam’s departure was emotional, as he tearfully said goodbye to his new friends.
“I actually cried when I left,” Adam recounted in an interview with Good Morning Britain.
Adam’s father, Andy, publicly thanked the group from Bristol on Facebook, noting, “You made Adam’s weekend.”

Andy expressed, “I wrote this post just to say thank you to the Mums and Dads. Their parents probably don’t know that their kids have done something absolutely amazing.”
The impact extended beyond friendship, as Adam, a music enthusiast and aspiring drum and bass DJ known as Adzo, began receiving performance offers after his story spread.
In a show of support, Boomtown Fair’s co-founder, Luke Mitchell, expressed joy over the story’s spread, and the festival invited Adam to perform in 2027.
What began as a simple gesture of inclusion at the festival led to remarkable opportunities for Adam.
The act of kindness, initiated by strangers at Boomtown, ultimately altered Adam’s life path, showcasing the profound effect of human connection.
