On March 24, during a hike through the rugged landscapes of the Campbell Range, Johnston fell nearly 180 feet from a waterfall. While she was rescued promptly by air, Molly was left behind amid the steep, bushy terrain.

The search for the dog seemed daunting, as the challenging conditions and absence of official resources for animal rescues in New Zealand posed significant hurdles. Yet, determination prevailed among those who believed Molly might still be alive.

Lillian Newton of Precision Helicopters was among those hopeful for Molly’s survival. Despite limited resources, the company sought public support to fund a search mission. In an unexpectedly rapid response, donations quickly exceeded expectations, demonstrating widespread empathy from individuals across the nation.

With thermal imaging tools and a dedicated team of volunteers, the search commenced. Returning to the site of Johnston’s fall, the team discovered Molly waiting near the location she last saw her owner.

Molly, though wet and cold after surviving alone for a week, was found among the rocks at the waterfall’s base. “They went directly to the spot where Jessica had fallen,” said Newton in an interview, “And much to our surprise, Molly was there.”

The rescue was intricate, with pilot Matt Newton carefully maneuvering the helicopter while a crew member retrieved the dog. The video footage captures Molly’s calm demeanor as she was safely secured.

The reunion with Johnston was filled with relief and emotion. “She’s been through a bloody rough week,” Johnston expressed. “But with both of us back home I can add this adventure to the list.”

The success of the operation left an emotional impact on the rescuers too. Newton remarked, “Someone told me we’d be ‘lotto lucky’ to find her. So for it all to pay off is just amazing.”

The remarkable efforts and community spirit turned a potential tragedy into a testament to resilience and hope, as Johnston and Molly begin their recovery together.
