An off-duty New York Police Department officer has been applauded for heroically saving an unconscious driver and averting a potential disaster on a bustling Brooklyn street.

The incident unfolded Sunday morning when the officer observed a vehicle running a red light at the intersection of 60th Street and Eighth Avenue in Sunset Park. On closer inspection, he noticed the driver was unconscious at the wheel.

Acting quickly, the officer stopped the vehicle, put it in park, and then removed the driver to perform CPR.

Councilwoman Susan Zhuang highlighted the broader impact of the officer’s intervention, noting how many lives might have been saved.

“He actually saved more than just a driver’s life. He saved the pedestrians life. The babies walking in the street, the grandparents walking the street. He saved everyone’s life,” Zhuang said.

Tony Ko, representing the New York State Fraternal Alliance Organization, confirmed the rescue was captured by a surveillance camera he had installed in the area. He also extended his appreciation to an onlooker who assisted during the event.

“I also want to express my gratitude to the brave individual who had the courage to help someone they didn’t know,” Ko said.

Zhuang emphasized the ongoing dedication of officers, whether on or off duty.

“We have to honor our off duty police officers. Even they are not on the job. They’re still helping people,” she said.

Plans are in place to honor the officer at a private City Council session later this month.

The officer, maintaining modesty amidst recognition, expressed to Eyewitness News that he was simply fulfilling his duty.
