A chance encounter weeks later introduced Widmer to Carole, her upstairs neighbor, when Carole’s recycling tumbled outside Widmer’s apartment due to her Parkinson’s tremors. Widmer’s offer to assist sparked an unexpected friendship.
Carole, at 85, lived independently, grappling with the limitations imposed by Parkinson’s and without family nearby. “I asked her two days ago, ‘My girl, what would have happened if I didn’t find you?'” Widmer later shared. “And she just looked me straight in the eye and said, ‘I would’ve struggled until somebody did.'”
Determined to support Carole, Widmer took on various roles, from handling household chores to navigating necessary paperwork. As their bond grew, Widmer shared their story online, capturing the hearts of millions.
The overwhelming response prompted strangers nationwide to ask how they could help. Offers of letters, meals, groceries, and financial support flooded in, alongside a fundraiser that amassed over $60,000. Improvements to Carole’s home, facilitated by her landlord, complemented these acts of generosity.
Beyond material aid, the true gift Widmer offered was companionship. Carole, though opting to stay off-camera, conversed on the phone, fondly referring to Widmer as family. “She’s actually my granddaughter,” Carole remarked.
“Yeah, I’m her granddaughter,” Widmer affirmed, laughing. Their relationship not only enriched Carole’s life but profoundly impacted Widmer’s as well. “She’s given me purpose,” Widmer explained. “I wouldn’t say that I’ve saved her. I’m just helping her out. But yeah, she’s definitely saved me.”
“We’ve been together in some other lifetime,” Carole mused. “We were more like sisters.”
